A man reportedly crawled through an open window into a Kent home while the family slept and stole a vehicle and two laptops.

Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of burglary and stealing a vehicle after Federal Way Police had stopped the man for speeding near South 344th Street and Highway 18, according to the police report.

Federal Way officers checked the vehicle’s registration and contacted Kent Police about a possible stolen vehicle at around 3:04 a.m. on April 22. When officers went to the East Hill home in the 24200 block of 98th Avenue South, they knocked on the door but nobody answered. An officer walked around the house and saw an open window with the screen taken off and a chair on the ground that would allow someone to reach the window. Police also found a back door unlocked.

Police called in more officers to the house before they went inside to clear the home. While inside, a couple came out of a bedroom where they were sleeping. The husband thought the vehicle was in the driveway. The wife told police their children were sleeping downstairs. In a hurry to get to them, she fell down the stairs. Paramedics transported her to a local hospital for an injured ankle. The children were safe.

The husband reported that the vehicle’s keys were missing from the house.

When police interviewed the accused thief, he admitted that he entered the house through an open window, found the keys to the car hanging in a room and left through a back door.

An officer noted that the area has been a crime hot spot for several years, including recent fights involving weapons and a crowd that gathered around officers dealing with another incident, according to the police report.

Three officers responded to the incident and three suspects were stopped. Meanwhile, a man walked over from the nearby Bryson Square Apartments and told officers he was tired of all the kids and criminal activity he sees from his apartment.

When police asked the man to move along, he reportedly didn’t move and later moved close to one of the suspects reported loitering in the area. An officer arrested the man for obstruction. When the man refused to put his hands behind his back, a short struggle began with two officers before they were able to force the man to the ground and handcuffed him.

While in the back of the patrol vehicle, the man yelled profanities and insults at the officers.
