Kent Police found a 2-year-old child unharmed and returned the child to the mother after someone stole the mother’s vehicle when she stepped away to pay for gas.

At about 4:16 p.m. Jan. 8, officers responded to a report of a vehicle theft where a 2-year-old child was inside when the vehicle was taken, according to Kent Police.

The mother was getting gas at the 7-Eleven at 511 Central Ave. S., and did not want to wake up her child who was asleep, according to police. She went inside to pay for the gas and came out to find her vehicle gone.

“The vehicle had the keys in it at the time it was taken,” Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner said.

Officers began to search for the vehicle and found it at about 5:22 p.m. at the Red Lion Inn, 25100 74th Ave. S., less than a mile west down Willis Street from the 7-Eleven store. The child was unharmed and returned to the mother.

“We are thankful the child was located unharmed,” Kasner said.

The suspect fled the scene.

“Detectives are working the investigation, evidence that was collected is being processed,” Kasner said when asked if police had any leads on a suspect.
