The Kent School Board will conduct a special workshop meeting at 4:30 p.m. March 4 to discuss the district’s budget.<\/p>\n
The meeting will take place at the District Administration Building, 12033 S.E. 256th St., and is open to the public.<\/p>\n
Board members indicated during the Feb. 25 meeting that preliminary findings from the two community budget workshops conducted Feb. 24 and 26 would be discussed in preparation for the board’s regularly scheduled March 11 meeting.<\/p>\n
The board is seeking ways to close a budget gap estimated to be up to $16 million. More than 1,900 residents and staff attended the two workshop sessions at Kent-Meridian High School and Kentwood High School to help the board prioritize for cuts a list of 23 programs totaling about $30 million.<\/p>\n
Included on the list were athletic and music programs, as well as increased class sizes at all levels and changes in transportation.<\/p>\n
It is expected that athletics and music will be among the community’s highest priorities, making it unlikely those programs would be cut.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
