The Census Bureau is looking for field staff in Kent and other King County cities to conduct in-person interviews with community residents to follow up on the completion of the 2010 census questionnaire.

Every household in King County will receive census questionnaires this spring in the mail. The field work starts shortly afterward at homes where residents did not return the mailed forms.

The temporary, part-time positions include paid training and reimbursement for approved travel expenses.

Census takers in King County earn $17.50 per hour. The positions offer flexible hours, with work conducted mostly in the employee’s own community.

The census data collected is used as vital information for community improvements, transportation planning, educational services and even emergency preparedness. It also is used to determine the community’s representation in government and to direct hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding, allocated for local projects, such as highways and bridges, public health and community-based programs.

Census job applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, be able to pass a background check and take a 30-minute, basic skills test. In most cases, workers will be required to have a valid driver’s license and have use of a vehicle.

Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Most jobs are expected to filled by mid-March.
