The Kent School District announced Friday evening, Sept. 2 that it will send communications to families and staff over the weekend as the district and striking teachers try to reach a contract agreement.

“Please be prepared to make alternate arrangements for Tuesday, Sept. 6, for potential continued school closure,” according to the district statement.

Teachers walked out Aug. 25, the scheduled opening day of school. The strike hit its seventh school day on Friday. There is no school Monday due to Labor Day. The Kent Education Association (teachers’ union) said the primary issues are pay, more mental health services for students and smaller class sizes and caseloads.

The district said if schools remain closed, free meals will be served to school-age children beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7, with more information and details of locations and times to be provided as soon as possible.

Community groups stepped up and provided free meals to students at numerous schools this week.

The district noted that people with questions regarding the work stoppage can email laborquestions@kent.k12.wa.us.
