The new Mel Lindbloom Student Union on Green River College\u2019s main campus in Auburn opens Monday.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The grand opening celebration begins at noon with a ribbon cutting ceremony, cake and tours of the facility.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The student union, which is named after the college\u2019s first president, replaces the Lindbloom Student Center, which had outgrown its capacity since it was built in 1971.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The $32.2 million project was funded by the college and by a self-imposed fee voted on by students in May 2007.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Students played an important role in helping design the building, from providing input on what it should include, to the finishes in the building, to naming areas of the facility.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Students can relax in the Mount Tahoma Lounge or grab a bite to eat from Gator Grill, which will serve cafeteria meals, or the Daily Grind, offering coffee house favorites.\u00a0They can work out using weights or cardio machines in the Recreation and Athletic Center or shoot some hoops on the basketball court.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The building will house offices, including student life, diversity, equity and inclusion, athletics, conferences services and food services.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Construction began in the late fall of 2013.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
