No more second. No more third.

For the Kentridge High girls tennis team, there’s only – and finally – first place.

“We’ve been trying for three years. It’s great to finally get it outright,” senior Anna McIntosh said, looking back on the Chargers’ 3-2 victory against Kentwood last Thursday that clinched the South Puget Sound League North Division championship. “After we got through the first half untouched, we were pretty confident.

The Chargers head into this final week of the regular season with a 12-0 record and two matches left. Kentwood, which won it all last year by going 13-1, was three matches back at 9-3, but still well positioned to claim second place.

“After all those years of losing to Kentwood and Auburn Riverside, it’s nice to see all our efforts finally come together,” said senior Chelsey White, who teamed with McIntosh for a 6-3, 6-1 victory in No. 1 doubles against Breanna Esber and Alyssa Nagai. “We’ve always had a talented team. We were pretty sure we could do it.”

The victory by McIntosh and White pushed their season record to 9-0 as they look ahead to next week’s SPSL tournament, in which they won both the North Division and overall league title last spring, and eventually went on to state.

But the Chargers also got plenty of help from the singles side of its lineup against Kentwood. Kim Quach remained undefeated in No. 1 play, boosting her record to 9-0 by defeating Kendall Bielinski, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Jazmin AhYat made it a sweep of single by beating Laura Araki in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1.

Kentwood’s points came from Kelsey Hurter and Niki Skinner in No. 2 doubles and from its No. 3 doubles tandem of Eliano Spero and Camille Madsen.
