The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 in a shootout Oct. 11 at ShoWare Center.

The game was tied 4-4 after 65 minutes of play, sending the game to a shootout.

Prab Rai shot first in the shootout for the T-Birds. He came down on Tri-City goalie Drew Owsley, faked right, brought the puck back left and tried to sneak the puck in at the left post. Owsley kicked out his right leg to stop the puck.

Brendan Shinnimin was Tri-City’s first shooter in the shootout. He came down on Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard and beat him with a shot through the five hole.

Colin Jacobs was Seattle’s second shooter in the shootout. Jacobs attempted to bring the puck through the crease to get off a backhand shot but lost control of the puck.

Johnny Lazo was the Americans’ second shooter in the shootout. He came down on Pickard and beat Pickard with a high shot over the shoulder to give the Americans a 2-0 win in the shootout and a 5-4 victory in the game.

The T-Birds broke out midway through the first period, scoring three goals in three minutes to take an early 3- 0 lead.

Seattle (2-5-0-1) scored their first goal of the night after Tanner Muth threw a shot on net that was stopped by Owsley. The puck came free and sat in the crease long enough for Chance Lund to knock it home and give Seattle a 1-0 lead at 12:11 of the first period.

A little over two minutes later, Jonathan Parker scored his third goal of the year and the T-Birds’ first power-play goal of the night. Lindsey Nielsen took the puck behind the Tri-City goal and delivered a centering pass to Parker who was waiting at the top of the slot with no defenders in front of him. Parker beat Owsley over the glove for the goal.

Parker scored again less than a minute later after Prab Rai intercepted an outlet pass at center ice and carried the puck into the Tri-City zone. Rai deked right to draw Owsley off his line and found Parker trailing to his left. Parker beat Owsley with a backhand for his second goal of the night.

T-Birds rookie Tyler Alos scored his first Western Hockey League goal and Seattle’s second power play goal of the night to give Seattle a 4-0 lead at 18:33. Brenden Silvester sent the puck from the left corner to Alos at the right post. Alos redirected Silvester’s pass over Owsley. Colin Jacobs had the second assist on the goal.

Tri-City outshot Seattle in the first period, 12-10.

Pickard made 36 saves on 41 shots and his record is now 2-2-0-1.
