Robert (Bobby) Hollis has left the Kent Police Department to be the new deputy police chief in Lacey, just north of Olympia.

Hollis was sworn in Dec. 8 by Lacey Police Chief Robert Almada and started his new duties the same day, according to a Dec. 10 city of Lacey press release.

The announcement follows a nationwide search and comprehensive selection process that included the participation of multi-discipline panel members, community members and stakeholders. Hollis is the second deputy chief in the department’s 55-year history.

“I am thrilled to have Hollis join our department as deputy chief,” Almada said. “I am confident he will be successful in his new position. We welcome him as a new community member and look forward to the integral role he will play in our city.”

Lacey has 60 officers serving approximately 52,000 residents, according to the city website.

Hollis comes to Lacey with over 20 years of law-enforcement experience, including 15 years with the Kent Police Department where he served most recently as a commander in charge of race, equity and inclusion initiatives. Hollis was named in 2020 by Kent Police to a new position of a race and social justice coordinator in addition to his other duties, which included working as a public information officer to provide media updates. He started in Kent in 2006.

Hollis has a bachelor of arts in sociology and an executive master’s degree in public administration, both from the University of Washington. When not working, Hollis enjoys playing soccer and spending time with his family volunteering for various organizations.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be part of the Lacey Police Department,” Hollis said. “And, I look forward to serving the Lacey community.”

Hollis worked his last day in Kent on Dec. 3.

“I have worked with the best people during my time here,” Hollis said in a Nov. 24 resignation letter to Chief Rafael Padilla, according to city documents. “I want to thank each of you who have made my time at Kent an enjoyable one, through both the good times and the bad. I appreciate everything you all have done for me and my family.”
