Kent Police sent out a notice Monday about a phone calling scam by someone who claims to be a representative of the city water department in an effort to obtain credit card numbers.

The person threatened to cut off water service if a credit card number was not provided to the caller, according to police. Police say that is not a threat any utility provider would make.

If you receive such a call, ask the caller for their name and a number to call back. Then contact your utility company customer service number that can be found on your bill or on the utility’s website to make sure your account is fine and alert them about the scam.
