Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a national holiday, is Jan. 18. With schools and many businesses closed, including the City of Kent offices, Kent Parks would like to encourage students, scouts and others to observe it by contributing community service.

Last year, 57 volunteers showed up on a cold, foggy afternoon to do a clean-up along the Interurban Trail.

For Kent Parks’ second-annual MLK Jr. Day of Service, the city is planning to clean up the wooded area at the West Hill Skate Park from 2-4 p.m. If the group is large enough, half will work with parks staff at West Fenwick Park.

Some parking is available at the skate park, with additional parking at West Fenwick Park further up the hill. Trash bags and a limited number of pick sticks will be provided. Volunteers should bring gloves, wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring a bottle of water if they wish.

Pre-registration is encouraged: www.KentWAParks.com, click on “Volunteer” to download the form. Or call 253-856-5110.
