The famous Seattle food franchise Katsu Burger recently opened a new location in Kent, bringing their katsu-style burgers to a new neighborhood and a ninth store in the Seattle area.

Katsu Burger, 6621 S. 211th St. in Kent, merges flavor associated with certain Japanese comfort food dishes with one of America’s favorite foods — the hamburger.

While they offer a variety of meat and meatless patties such as beef, chicken, pork and tofu on their sandwiches, each one is breaded and fried in the katsu style.

“It is kind of weird being a burger place that doesn’t actually cook using a grill,” said Katsu Burger spokesperson Christopher Poetter.

At first glance and taste, their burgers compare well to what you would expect from a traditional hamburger, but the details are what creatively set their sandwiches apart. The first thing to notice is the crispy golden-brown patties, which are both a welcomed crunch and an expected tenderness upon the first bite.

The sauces are also worthy of a try, as they take Japanese inspiration to recreate flavors that will be familiar to an American palate, such as their sweet and tangy miso honey mustard. Their tonkatsu sauce, traditionally paired with a katsu cutlet, brings a similar flavor element to what barbecue sauce might bring to a burger.

They also offer different french fry seasonings including curry spice and nori fries, a dried seaweed flake seasoning that brings a salty-umami flavor to traditional french fries.

Since the franchise was established around 2016, they have opened nine locations across the Puget Sound and have become an iconic Seattle franchise.

“We love what we do and we want to share it with people,” Poetter said. “You can’t get this anywhere else.”
