Sharonne Navas of Kent has been appointed to the five-member Green River College Board of Trustees by Gov. Jay Inslee.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
She replaces Mark Albertson, who resigned from the board last fall due to illness. Albertson, a Kent attorney, was appointed to the board in 2012.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Navas, who term expires Sept. 30, 2017. is the co-founder and executive director of the Equity in Education Coalition, speaking for the needs and assets of students of color, low-income students and immigrants and refugees.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
She previously worked as a community organizer with Stand for Children, executive director of Para Los Ni\u00f1os, assistant director of development for NARAL Pro-Choice America, deputy executive director for Ayuda, Inc. and development coordinator for the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
In 2010, she was appointed as Commissioner for the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
“I am honored and humbled to be appointed to the Board of Trustees of Green River College,” Navas said in press release from the college. “I’m excited to bring an equity lens to such an important community institution. I look forward to working with faculty, students and the broader community to showcase the breadth of diversity, backgrounds and skills within the Green River campus.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Navas joins on the board Linda Cowan, former Auburn School District superintendent; Claudia Kauffman, former state senator; Tim Clark, former Kent City councilman and educator; and Pete Lewis, former Auburn mayor.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
