Reporter staff<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Teams from throughout the state \u2013 many with creative and unusual nicknames \u2013 converged at the ShoWare Center last Saturday for a robotics showcase.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Kids tested their clever robots and mighty machines at the FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge State Championships.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n More than 1,200 kids, grades 4 through 12, competed at the FIRST Washington FIRST Robotics event.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Winning teams advanced to the FTC West Super-Regional Championship on March 27-29 in Oakland, Calif.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n FLL team names included the Bearded Pineapples, Taco Truck Disaster!, Robogators, Ascension Laboratories, Java Bots, Seattle SeaBots, Laser Tasers, Doughnut Powered Doom, LegoSplat! and The Not So Mad Scientists. FTC teams included the Oly Cows, Roarbotics, Mindbot Maniacs and Cyborg Ferrets<\/p>\n<\/p>\n FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, N.H., the not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n FIRST is more than robots.
