Drivers can expect single-lane closures along South 212th Street in Kent between 72nd Avenue South and 84th Avenue South over the next few months.

Crews will restore the roadway surface with a grind and new hot mix asphalt overlay, according to the city Public Works Department. The project also updates Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility.

Work began June 7 and will continue through fall from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. This well-traveled road serves as a major thoroughfare to bring freight to and from the Kent Valley.

A $1.4 million grant to the city from the Puget Sound Regional Council in 2018 will fund most of the $1.8 million project. The remaining funds will come from the city’s B&O taxes.

The Kent City Council awarded Issaquah-based Lakeside Industries the bid for the project.

Kent also received a $1.5 million grant in 2020 from the Puget Sound Regional Council to help pay for an estimated $3 million asphalt overlay project along South 212th Street between the Green River Bridge and Orillia Road.

That project could go out to bid this summer depending on funding, according to Public Works staff.
