The half-built parking garage that has sat idle for more than four years in Kent is coming down.

Crews will start Monday, Oct. 3 to demolish the garage to make way for construction of a five-story, mixed-use development to include about 164 urban-style apartments and 3,700 square feet of retail space and public parking, according to Kent city officials.

The unfinished garage sits at the southeast corner of West Smith Street and Fourth Avenue.

Demolition is expected to start at 11 a.m. Oct. 3 and continue daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for about 10 days.

The Kent City Council approved sale of the property Sept. 20 to Goodman Real Estate, Inc., of Seattle.

“After the demolition, we should have the site cleared by the end of October,” said Brad Reisinger, project manager with Goodman Real Estate, in a city media release.

During next week’s demolition work, the sidewalk and one lane on the east side of Fourth Avenue will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday; and the sidewalk and one lane on the south side of Smith Street will be closed Wednesday through Friday.

Rhine Demolition of Tacoma, the same contractor slated to remove the Alaskan Way Viaduct, will do the work.

Work stopped on the garage in May 2007 when the initial developer ran out of funds.
