Folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens has cancelled his Oct. 8 concert at the Kentwood High School Performing Arts Center because of health reasons.

Havens, 69, has cancelled all of his current tour dates, according to a city of Kent media release. The Kent Arts Commission and Kent Parks Department present the annual Spotlight Series that had scheduled Havens as part of the lineup.

Havens broke into the music scene in the early 1960s in Greenwich Village in New York. He performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, including an encore rendition of the spiritual “Motherless Child.” Havens has continued his success with more than 25 albums over three decades.

“Richie Havens underwent successful routine surgery this summer,” according to a statement from the management team of Havens. “Post-surgery, with full medical clearance and his doctor’s blessing, and in an effort to honor contractual obligations, Richie returned to his rigorous touring schedule five weeks later. But after 45 years of live concerts, the travel and performances feel demanding and exhausting.

“Though this has been a very difficult decision for him, Richie feels compelled to cancel his upcoming appearances in order to rest and recharge. He looks forward to rescheduling his fall tour dates as soon as possible.”

The City of Kent Arts Commission will issue full refunds to customers who already purchased tickets for the performance. For more information, call the Cultural Programs office at 253-856-5050.
