Fire investigators on Thursday were sifting through the remains of a home in the 19400 block of S.E. 267 St. in Covington, following a fire which was first reported at 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

Fire, which heavily damaged the single story house, was shooting out many windows and doorways when firefighters arrived. The smoke column could be seen for miles. Firefighters fought the flames from the outside of the building due to safety concerns about the stability of the house once they learned that all the occupants had escaped.

Six people, two adults and four children, were home at the time of the fire. Everyone escaped safely, though all six were sent to a local hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation. Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family.

According to the homeowner, there were working smoke alarms in the home, though it is unclear whether they played a part in warning the family of the fire.

No further information is currently available about the cause of the fire or dollar loss.
