Most downtown Kent streets will be closed Thursday, June 11 for a Black Lives Matter Protest March for Justice and Peace.

The downtown core main arterial streets will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 11 a.m., according to the City Public Works Department. Side roadways began closing at 7 a.m.

The city will reopen the streets at approximately 7 p.m. The protest is scheduled to go from 3 to 7 p.m. The march will start at the Maleng Regional Justice Center, 401 Fourth Ave. N., and wind through several streets before ending at City Hall.

Eastbound James Street will be open from Railroad Avenue to Central Avenue to allow traffic to exit the transit center and Willis Street will remain open to allow travel through the Valley. Traffic control will be in place.

Those who plan to attend the event are asked by city officials to park at the Lincoln Park and Ride, 902 W. James St., and to return to the lot afterwards by walking down Fourth Avenue to Smith Street.
