{"id":45841,"date":"2020-05-11T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T21:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/south-king-county-cities-to-receive-millions-in-covid-19-relief-funds\/"},"modified":"2020-05-11T15:03:34","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T22:03:34","slug":"south-king-county-cities-to-receive-millions-in-covid-19-relief-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/south-king-county-cities-to-receive-millions-in-covid-19-relief-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"South King County cities to receive millions in COVID-19 relief funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dozens of cities across 22 counties in Washington state will soon receive their portion of nearly $300 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funds awarded to the state to address costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The flexibility of the funds allows cities and counties to use their allocation for everything from public health and human services expenses to small business and economic support.<\/p>\n<p>Announced May 11 by the Washington State Department of Commerce, <a href=\"https:\/\/deptofcommerce.app.box.com\/s\/3q9f5s4z2bhd5trjqri1ggpi7mlgnydx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the list of state recipients<\/a> includes 38 cities in King County. Part of Auburn will receive $2.15 million. A portion of Enumclaw will get $366,000. Federal Way is set to receive $2.9 million. Kent will receive $3.89 million. Renton has been allocated $3.1 million. The state&rsquo;s total amount of allocated CARES Act COVID-19 relief funds is $296,583,270.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Cities and counties are the places we live &mdash; and they are the governments closest to the people. They are taking extraordinary measures to protect their residents during the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to provide the basic services we all rely on,&rdquo; said Commerce Director Lisa Brown. &ldquo;Commerce is committed to moving these critical dollars as quickly as possible so communities can plan and prepare for safe reopening and recovery.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Municipalities were allocated funding based on population, COVID-19 impact and other factors, according to a May 11 announcement. The Department of Commerce is in the process of contracting with local governments to receive funds.<\/p>\n<p>Funds may be used for costs incurred by the local government in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency from March 1 through Oct. 31.<\/p>\n<p>Funds cannot be used to fill shortfalls in government revenue to cover expenditures that would not otherwise qualify under the statute or be used as revenue replacement.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the CARES Act relief payments cannot be used to cover costs accounted for in the budget most recently approved as of March 27, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.wa.gov\/serving-communities\/community-development-block-grants\/covid-resiliency-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Allowable expenses include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medical and public health expenses.<\/li>\n<li>Payroll expenses for public safety, public health, health care, human services, and similar employees whose services are substantially dedicated to mitigating or responding to the emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Expenses of actions to facilitate compliance with public health measures.<\/li>\n<li>Expenses associated with the provision of economic support in connection with the emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Any other COVID-19-related expenses reasonably necessary to the function of government that satisfy the fund&rsquo;s eligibility criteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federal Way, Renton, Enumclaw, Kent, Auburn among cities to benefit from Washington State Department of Commerce CARES Act. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":665,"featured_media":45842,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,4],"tags":[],"yst_prominent_words":[],"class_list":["post-45841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/45841"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/665"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=45841"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/45841\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/45842"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=45841"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=45841"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=45841"},{"taxonomy":"yst_prominent_words","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/yst_prominent_words?post=45841"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
