Lucky House Chinese Restaurant, 317 E. Smith St.

The initial call came in at about 4:30 a.m. when a passerby reported smoke from the rear of the restaurant, according to a Puget Sound Fire media release. The first arriving engine company found smoke but no flames from what appeared to be a trash compactor next to the building and initiated the fire attack there.

The next arriving crew reported smoke inside the building and the call was upgraded to bring additional resources including units from Valley Regional Fire Authority, King County Medic One, Zone 3 Rehab and Kent Police for traffic control. Once the smoke was cleared the interior crews found minimal fire spread to the inside of the building.

The fire was out approximately 30 minutes after the arrival of the first crew and the resources from surrounding jurisdictions were sent home. Puget Sound Fire remained on scene to assist with the investigation. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.

While the cause is still under investigation, the investigator confirmed that the fire started in the small area between a large outdoor freezer and the exterior of the building. There was a rear door to the restaurant adjacent to the door to the freezer. It appeared that there had been some materials stored in this void space.

The restaurant was reported to have been open Wednesday serving food for both takeout and delivery for lunch and dinner. Due to the quick attack the damage to the building was very limited. The restaurant plans to reopen as quickly as possible, according to Puget Sound Fire.
