Four Kent City Council members were sworn in at Tuesday night’s meeting at City Hall.

Les Thomas, Bill Boyce, Marli Larimer and Zandria Michaud were sworn in by Kent Municipal Court Judge Michael Frans. Each will serve four-year terms.

Voters re-elected Thomas and Boyce in November. Thomas is in his 17th year on council and Boyce is starting his ninth year in office. The council appointed Larimer in 2018 to replace Tina Budell, who resigned to take a job in Chicago. Voters elected Larimer and Michaud in November.

Michaud is the lone newcomer to the council. She replaces Dennis Higgins, who filled out Dana Ralph’s council term after voters elected her mayor in 2017. Michaud served five years on the Kent Parks and Recreation Commission, including a term as vice chair and a term as chair. She was initially sworn in last month because her term began in December since Higgins was appointed by the council to replace Ralph.

The other members of the council include Toni Troutner, Brenda Fincher and Satwinder Kaur. Their terms expire at the end of 2021. Troutner replaced Boyce as council president starting this month. Fellow council members elected her in a 4-2 vote on Dec. 10 to be council president for 2020 and 2021. The council president works closely with the chief administrative officer and city department heads to set agendas and serves as a spokesperson for the council.
