Kent School District students joined 15,000 other young adults at We Day Seattle at KeyArena last Friday.

The day focused on getting students excited about activism and making social change through volunteering on a local and global level. Various speakers presented ideas, ranging from starting up local community projects to encourage education to traveling to impoverished countries to help build infrastructure.

“I liked how they had a variety of different speakers,” said Kentlake High student Lauren Skinner.

Speakers for the day included: Spencer West, known for having his legs amputated at age 5 but still ascending a trail up Mount Kilimanjaro; actor Edward Norton who has worked in several overseas projects and social services ventures; and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.

Students said their favorite speaker was West because of “his idea of redefining the impossible.”

Event sponsors Microsoft and The Allstate Foundation also brought in renowned other speakers and musical acts, including Joe Jonas, Cody Simpson, Hannah Alper and Flo Rida, along with international activists and co-founders of Free The Children, Craig and Marc Kielburger.
