King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove announced Wednesday that the city of Kent will receive a $325,000 grant to expand Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park.

The city will use the money to purchase a lot of land adjacent to the park and which, when combined with a previously-purchased parcel, will become a new southern entryway and trailhead for the park, according to a county news release.

Expanding Mill Creek Canyon Park, 100 Reiten Road, will improve the connection between downtown Kent and nearby neighborhoods, and will allow the city to preserve the park’s habitat for mature second growth trees, local deer, coyote and native songbirds.

The grant is funded from King County’s Conservation Futures program, dedicated to purchasing open space lands and conservation easements across the county.

“I’m excited that King County is partnering with the city of Kent to expand Mill Creek Canyon Park and make it nicer and more accessible,” Upthegrove said.
