The Next Generation 9-1-1 Institute honors Maple Valley teenager Austin Curry with the Citizen in Action award on Tuesday, April 16 at the Valley Communications Center, 27519 108th Ave. SE, Kent.

Curry was honored for his response in helping resuscitate a 1-year-old baby after the mother, his neighbor, screamed for help. The award recognizes an individual or group of any age who demonstrated exceptional bravery and heroism to respond in a critical time using 9-1-1.

On Jan. 3, Valley Communications Officer Shauna Stark received a call from Curry, who reported the baby was turning blue, unable to breath. Curry calmly relayed instructions to the baby’s mother, who was understandably distraught. Curry remained calm and under control, and under Stark’s direction, was able to get the baby breathing prior to the fire department’s arrival, Valley Com said.

As they worked together to maintain the infant’s airway, Curry kept his calm and collected demeanor. His actions were nothing short of heroic and impressive, especially for a 17-year-old, Valley Com said.
