{"id":39478,"date":"2019-03-07T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T19:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/state-house-approves-orwall-bill-to-clear-untested-rape-kit-backlog\/"},"modified":"2019-03-07T11:15:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T19:15:00","slug":"state-house-approves-orwall-bill-to-clear-untested-rape-kit-backlog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/state-house-approves-orwall-bill-to-clear-untested-rape-kit-backlog\/","title":{"rendered":"State House approves Orwall bill to clear untested rape kit backlog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>State House lawmakers voted unanimously Wednesday in Olympia to pass legislation (<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1166&#038;Year=2019\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"link\">House<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1166&#038;Year=2019\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"link\"> Bill <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1166&#038;Year=2019\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"link\">1166<\/a>) addressing the backlog of more than 8,000 rape kits in police custody.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our state has been moving in the right direction to support survivors, but we are still behind other states, like Oregon and Ohio, on clearing our backlog,&rdquo; said bill sponsor Rep. Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines, in a news release. &ldquo;This bill is about lifting up the voices of survivors and providing law enforcement with the tools they need to finally hold these violent predators accountable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her tenure at the Legislature, Orwall has championed bills supporting survivors of sexual violence.
