Legislation expanding language interpretation services for families in public schools passed off the House floor on Monday in Olympia.

“Engaging parents and families is critical to student success,” said Rep. Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines, who sponsored the legislation. “We need to embrace best practices and remove barriers to improve language access in our public education system.”

“We are deeply grateful to Rep. Orwall who has been a tireless advocate for our families who span so many legislative districts,” said Ginger Kwan, executive director for Open Doors for Multicultural Families. “The House has heard our call to action to help diverse families engage in schools. We now look to the Senate and ask for their support.”

There are more than 200 languages spoken by students and families attending Washington public schools. The bill would also include services for deaf students and families.
