Washington State Patrol troopers will be out in force this Labor Day weekend to ensure travelers arrive safely to their destination.

Labor Day is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year. In preparing for this holiday weekend, troopers will be bolstering their emphasis patrols and allocating resources to get personnel in the areas with peak traffic volumes and calls for service, according to a State Patrol media release.

Troopers will focus on distracted driving violations. Distracted drivers are a leading cause of collisions in the state. Troopers will look for drivers talking on their cellphones or texting.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, watch their following distance and avoid unsafe lane changes. These violations greatly increase the likelihood of a collision, which will restrict the flow of traffic, preventing travelers from getting to their destination in a timely manner.

Troopers will also focus on removing impaired drivers from the roadway. Speed and impairment are the leading causes of traffic fatalities.
