For the Reporter

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks honored Sunrise Elementary School teacher Tiffany Evenstad as a Symetra Hero in the Classroom during a school assembly Sept. 7.

Seahawks mascot Blitz was on hand to help surprise Evenstad, who teaches third grade at the K-6 elementary school in Kent. She is the 250th Puget Sound-area educator celebrated since Symetra established the teacher-recognition program in 2006.

“Tiffany Evenstad plays an inspirational role in her students’ lives,” said Gina Chau, a parent who nominated Evenstad for the award. “Even though my son is moving into a new grade this school year, Ms. Evenstad has forever left an impact on his education and overall self-esteem. She was able to transform this shy, reserved young student into an active, participating learner who now feels confident in sharing his ideas and answers in the classroom.

“Ms. Evenstad’s passion for teaching truly shows through her actions. Her ability to incorporate real-life lessons and custom worksheets into her curriculum help bring out each child’s strengths and capabilities and connects her to every student on a personal level. Seeing my son blossom into a confident child has meant a great deal to me as a parent.”

Symetra Heroes in the Classroom are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and Symetra makes a $2,000 donation to each teacher-Hero’s school for classroom books and supplies. Teachers also receive tickets to a Seahawks home game, where they enjoy a pre-game sideline experience and are acknowledged during on-field presentations at CenturyLink Field. Evenstad will be recognized at the Seahawks’ home opener on Sept. 23, vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The honorees are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students’ lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
