The Kent Police Department is accepting applications for the Fall Community Police Academy. Classes are Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 9, for 10 weeks, beginning Sept. 26 and ending Dec. 5 at the Kent Police\/Fire Training Center, 24523 116th Ave. SE, Kent.<\/p>\n

Two Saturday sessions, the first being Oct. 6, covers topics on detectives, evidence and crime scenes, and the second on Nov. 17 includes optional tours of the Kent Correctional Facility (Kent jail) and Valley Communications Center (911 facility). After attending seven classes, participants are eligible for a ride-along with a Kent Police officer.<\/p>\n

The academy is delivered in a series of classes that offers straightforward, candid information regarding daily and specialized operations of the police department, while defining the agency’s role in the community.<\/p>\n

A wide range of law enforcement topics will be discussed to include an overview of law enforcement, recruiting\/hiring for new employees, traffic enforcement, investigations, narcotics, gangs, community education, use of force, stress and chaplaincy, and K-9.<\/p>\n

There is no cost for participating. It is open to any adult 18 years or older that lives, works or has an interest in the city of Kent and its police department. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Applications are available online at Community Police Academy. For security reasons all applicants must pass a background check. Persons with a felony conviction or recent misdemeanor conviction are not eligible to participate.<\/p>\n
