Volunteers are needed to pick up litter during a citywide event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 15 in Kent.

The city of Kent, along with the Kent Downtown Partnership, Kent Station, Republic Services, The Golden Steer Steak ‘n Rib House and The Doorman Service Co. Inc., is kicking off Pollution Prevention Week (Sept. 17-23) by inviting residents to “Team Up 2 Clean Up Kent.”

Volunteers can pick up free gloves and trash bags and get directions to “hot spots” – the areas that need the most attention – by meeting at one of two locations:

• 8 a.m. at Kherson Park, 307 W. Gowe St. (downtown)

• 9 a.m. at Golden Steer Steak & Rib House, 23826 104th Ave. SE (East Hill)

Trash bags can also be dropped off in donated dumpsters from Republic Services at the same locations that day until noon.

According to city conservation assistant, Tony Donati, this year’s effort is going to be even bigger and better than in years past.

“Even more of Kent’s organizations are joining forces to create awareness and make a larger impact,” Donati said in a city news release. With check-in and drop-off locations on the East Hill and downtown, we hope this encourages participation and makes getting involved in cleaning up Kent more convenient.”

“We hope to get a great turnout at this year’s litter clean up,” said Kent Mayor Dana Ralph. “Historically, several community organizations have held individual events. By working together, we can make a visible difference across the entire city.”

Individuals and groups interested in participating must register by 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14 at KentWA.gov/TalkingTrash.
