A Kent Police officer fired a Taser to stop a man who tussled with another officer in the middle of the street.

The incident began at about 9:44 a.m. Aug. 4 when an officer saw a man walk out into the middle of the street against traffic signals near State Avenue North and East Smith Street, according to the police report. Three drivers slammed on their brakes to avoid hitting the man.

The officer got out of his vehicle and approached the man, who responded, “I was just jaywalking that’s all.”

The man then reportedly began to tense up as if he wanted to fight, so the officer called for a second unit to respond. When the man began to take off a backpack, the officer saw he had a folded knife in his pants pocket. When the officer tried to control the man, a struggle began and both men ended up in the middle of State Avenue.

A second officer showed up and saw that the man continued to scuffle with the first officer, so he fired a Taser into the man’s back. The officers then were able to handcuff the man.

Police arrested the man for investigation of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. After officers transported the man to the city jail, he fought with jail staff, who placed the man in a body wrap to control him.

An officer noted the man smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech, according to the police report.

Church members had escorted the man out of the church because he was intoxicated. He had walked into the church because the doors were open, but the report didn’t indicate what the man wanted. As members waited for the man to leave, he reportedly picked up a chair and threw it at one of the men. The chair struck the man in the face and cut him above his eye.

The intoxicated man told police the men had jumped him. He denied he threw a chair.

Man hits wife with chair

Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly threw a chair that bruised his wife’s arm during a dispute at about 8:45 p.m. Aug. 6 at a house in the 23900 block of 92nd Place South.

The wife told officers she argued with her husband about their children because he never makes an effort to help out with them, according to the police report. She said her husband threw a dining table chair at her.

The husband denied he hit his wife with a chair. He said he tipped over the chair, but it didn’t hit her. When asked by an officer how his wife got a bruised arm, the man replied he didn’t know.

Man takes dairy products

Officers arrested a man for investigation of third-degree theft after he allegedly took a couple of dairy products Aug. 6 from Safeway, 20830 108th Ave. SE.

Loss prevention officers had the man in custody at the store after watching him take the items, according to the police report.
