Kent’s East Valley Highway (aka 84th Avenue South) will be reduced to one lane in each direction between South 196th Street and South 180th Street for road construction from Aug. 15 through Nov. 30.

Northbound lanes will be reduced to one lane from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Southbound lanes will go to one lane from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers can expect delays and are asked by city officials to use alternate routes when possible. Traffic control will be in place.

Kent-based Scarsella Bros. Inc., will install a new asphalt surface, ADA compliant curb ramps, concrete approaches to the railroad crossing near South 188th Street, new vehicle detection systems and new channelization.

The City Council approved Scarsella’s low bid of $2.2 million for the project. The city will pay for the project out of its business and occupation tax fund. The council adopted a B&O tax in 2014 to help pay for street repairs because so many roads were in bad shape.
