Kent has another new community garden for refugees and immigrant families with the opening of 35 family spots at St. Columba Episcopal Church on the West Hill.

The garden will especially benefit low-income families and immigrants and refugees from Congo, Sudan and Bhutan, according to an email from Forterra, which worked with the International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program to open the site. A party and ribbon cutting celebrated the opening last month at the church, 26715 Military Road S. The 1-acre site also includes an apple, pear and cherry orchard.

“It gives happiness when we are eating the food you planted, watered, saw how it’s grown and cooked yourself,” said Mali Godefroid, a gardener originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Global to Local and more than 100 volunteers transformed the plot from a formidable blackberry bramble into a beautiful new garden.

In May, World Relief Seattle helped to open 50 garden sites at the Paradise Parking Plots Community Gardens at Hillside Church, 930 E. James St.
