Kent City Council members will interview seven candidates for the Position No. 1 vacant seat during a special meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

The interviews are open to the public. The council will go into executive session to evaluate the candidates after the interviews. If members agree on a choice, the council will then open the meeting to appoint the new council member, who will be sworn into office.

The seven finalists for the part-time position are Hira Singh Bhullar, Suzanne Cameron, Sara Franklin, Marli Larimer, Zandria Michaud, Mizanur Rahman and Bill Shorr.

The seat became vacant when Tina Budell resigned April 13 after two years in office to take a new job in Chicago. Thirty-six people applied for the vacant position.

The new council member will serve until an election for the position in November 2019. The appointed council member also will be eligible to run for the position. The elected individual would take office as soon as the election is certified. Budell had just under two years remaining on her four-year term.

Kent’s seven council members establish law and policy by passing ordinances and resolutions. Each council member receives a monthly salary of $1,265.
