The city of Kent aims to strengthen ties with its Mexican residents when Mayor Suzette Cooke accepts a bronze bust of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, precursor of Mexico\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Cast by German artist Michel-Leal and being presented by the Consul of Mexico, Eduardo Baca Cuenca, the bust is a gift from the government of Mexico to Kent in recognition of its sister city relationship with El Grullo, Mexico and the two countries\u2019 common ideals of freedom.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The ceremony is from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Kent City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Cooke says she is honored to receive this gift on behalf of the city.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThis partnership has been so valuable, as are the relationships that have been developed during our reciprocal visits,” Cooke said in a city media release. “Kent\u2019s Sister City Association must be applauded for the exceptional job it does in strengthening our ties, and supporting business and investment opportunities with Mexico and countries around the world.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
On this occasion, Consul Baca underlined the importance of the relationship between Mexico and the United States, and between Mexico and Washington, especially through the contact between peoples from both sides. He said \u201cthis is a gift from the government and people of Mexico to the people and city of Kent, as a permanent symbol of the ties that bind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
In the early 19th century, Father Hidalgo advocated Mexican independence from Spain and rallied support for the effort. While captured and executed by royal troops in 1810, Hidalgo\u2019s movement continued, leading to Mexico\u2019s independence in 1821. The state of Hidalgo was later named in his honor.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The bust will be installed and displayed in the foyer of Kent City Hall.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
