For the Reporter

Bree Newsome – American filmmaker, musician, speaker and activist – is special guest for the Feb. 22 Green River College’s Artist & Speakers program.

The talks is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union Building (Grand Hall) on campus, 12401 SE 320th St., Auburn.

It is free to the public.

Newsome garnered national attention for her daring act of peaceful disobedience in June 2015. Following the brutal murder of nine black parishioners in Charleston, S.C., Newsome climbed the flagpole at the South Caroline statehouse and pulled down the Confederate battle flag as a protest against racist symbolism. Her arrest galvanized public opinion and led to the permanent removal of the flag.

As a recognized voice on injustice and racial discrimination, Newsome brings to light the importance of leadership in building and sustaining social movements. The lecture will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Prime Time program instructor Rich Elfers.

The program is presented as part of the Artist & Speakers program.

[7
["post-33010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-life
