Kent School District (KSD) kicks off its career program Medical Careers Pathways, a partnership with Renton Technical College (RTC).

On Wednesday, Kentlake High School, the site for the program, hosts a kickoff celebration with a barbecue, the RTC sign unveiling and a chance to tour the classrooms.

The open house and barbecue begin at 4 p.m. at the school, 21401 SE Falcon Way, Kent.

Kentlake High School Principal Joe Potts will address attendees at 6 p.m. Classroom visits will run until 8:40 p.m.

KSD students and anyone who lives in the district can take college level courses at Kentlake. Students take courses concurrently with their high school curriculum during the day or in the evening with other community members—all at a fraction of the cost of a college class.

Students have the potential to graduate from high school not only with their diploma, but also with a professional certification or an associate’s degree in one of several medical careers. Classes will be taught by RTC faculty, and the credits earned could lead these students to a four-year degree through the UW Accelerated program – also held at Kentlake.

“This is a great opportunity for Kentlake students and members of our community to earn certifications and degrees in the medical field,” said Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas. “There is a great deal of demand for qualified people to fill these positions. This is only one of our multiple pathways to graduation that put our students in an excellent position for successful futures.”
