King County Assessor John Wilson on Wednesday called on the members of the Washington State congressional delegation to oppose changes to the tax code proposed by President Donald Trump.

Wilson said in a press release Trump’s plan will raise taxes on middle class families and worsen the current housing affordability crisis, specifically the elimination of the home mortgage, real estate tax and local tax deductions.

The median home price in King County is now more than $600,000. While nationwide, most Americans do not itemize their taxes; that is not true for King County homeowners. Losing these deductions, therefore, will not just impact a few wealthy individuals, but rather the vast majority of middle class families in King County, Wilson said.

“Tax reform should not result in millions of hard working Americans getting a tax increase,” Wilson said. “I urge you to protect the features of our tax code that encourage home ownership, and oppose changes that will make housing even more unaffordable in the Puget Sound region.”
