I enjoyed reading your article about the Skyward Family Access plan for the Kent School District. However, I’d like to point out that my situation is quite different.

I am a 14-year-old eighth-grader and I attend Northwood Middle School. I live in a family of six children and I’m the fifth.

Ever since Skyward was introduced in 2006, my older siblings and I have really benefited from the information it provides. I personally like the program because it can let me check up on how I’m doing in each class individually and it lets me see what specific areas of a class I’m struggling in.

In my junior high experience I’ve always had Skyward available and I check it at least twice a week. For example, I like to know what grade I got on a geometry test the day that I took it. I really appreciate how diligent my math teacher is in grading our daily quizzes and our chapter tests and then updating our Skyward accounts by the next school day.

On the other hand, my mom checks my grades on Skyward maybe twice a year. She knows that she can trust me and my siblings to do quality work and get it turned in on time. She believes (and I agree) that our grades are our own responsibility and that we should be able to keep them in balance without the constant hovering of our parents, which I appreciate.

Multiple times in the past I have noticed something in my grade book that I disagreed with and I alone have contacted my teacher to get that flaw fixed. I think that the ability to do this really reflects how responsible students are.

I think that Skyward is a great resource for Middle School and High School students and I think that it is one of the best things that the Kent School District has incorporated into their system.
