Many of you are still trying to decide who to vote for in the Kent mayoral race, and as the wife of Jim Berrios, I would like to tell you a little about my husband and why I believe he would make an excellent mayor.

Instead of focusing on his political accomplishments, I want to tell you about the friend, community leader, mentor, employer and most importantly the loving husband and father I know him to be.

Jim is the kind of friend who will drop everything to rush to the side of a mountain after an avalanche to spend the night with you, freezing in a parking lot, praying that by some miracle your husband managed to survive and will come walking safely out of the woods.

He’s the kind of mentor who never, ever, gives up on you. More importantly, he never lets you give up on yourself. He’s the kind of mentor who pushes you to be the first one in your family to graduate high school, and then insists on being the one to hand you your diploma.

As an employer, he wants nothing but the best for his employees, even if that means insisting on them going to college and following their dreams away from the restaurant. He’s the type of employer who takes the time after hours to teach an employee how to drive, and then goes with them to offer his advice when they buy their first car.

As a father, Jim never let a long, hard day get in the way of spending quality time with his kids, even when that meant spending hours playing “restaurant” with his daughter, because she could not get enough of her daddy. He taught his kids the value of a hard day’s work by giving them their first job, and expecting them to work as hard as any other employee. And, of course, he’s the type of father who leads by example, teaching them to appreciate their blessings and give back to the community.

And, as a husband, Jim supports me in every way. Despite my faults and flaws, he is a warm and generous partner who makes it a point every day to let me know I am loved.

Elections are not only about the candidate’s records, experiences and qualifications. They are also about who they are as a person. Jim has repeatedly refused to send out negative mailers or other types of attacks on his opponent, despite being encouraged by many to do so. It just is not in his character.

I believe Jim is the right candidate to lead this city, not only because he has a strong record as a city councilman, but also the moral character to make this city even better going forward. I hope you will join me in voting for Jim Berrios as mayor for the city of Kent.
