The Kent city-owned and SMG-managed accesso ShoWare Center, along with other city agencies, will participate in the nationwide Great Shakeout Drill (drop, cover & hold), the annual public earthquake drill at 10:19 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19.

This is an opportunity for the facility staff, including the Seattle Thunderbirds, to drill earthquake preparedness. In addition to drilling “what to do” and evacuating, the facility will test radio communication with the Kent Emergency Coordination Center.

The building has been provided with a suitable radio for emergency communications that will communicate directly with the Kent Emergency Coordination Center and other city departments. During the Great Shakeout Drill the emergency radio will be tested and the facility will report the status of their employees, building and equipment.

According to The Great Washington Shakeout website “federal, state and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes.
