{"id":30798,"date":"2017-10-06T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/letters\/kudos-to-mayor-cooke\/"},"modified":"2017-10-06T10:30:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-06T17:30:00","slug":"kudos-to-mayor-cooke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/letters\/kudos-to-mayor-cooke\/","title":{"rendered":"Kudos to Mayor Cooke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Mayor Suzette Cooke&rsquo;s mid-biennium budget adjustment proposal to the City Council on Sept. 26, she presented a balanced budget and proposed two new tax measures.<\/p>\n<p>One measure would benefit our parks system, the other would benefit our criminal justice system, police, prosecutors, public defenders, court clerks, police records clerks and correction officers.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Cooke said, &ldquo;Public safety must remain our highest priority.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Public safety &#8211; specifically, increased police staffing &#8211; was the No. 1 priority of the city of Kent Financial Sustainability Task Force report in June of 2016. Mayor Cooke&rsquo;s proposal for a criminal justice measure is right in line with that of the task force.<\/p>\n<p>I support the mayor&rsquo;s proposal for a criminal justice measure to be placed on the April 2018 ballot. I encourage the City Council to begin work immediately to prepare the criminal justice measure for the April ballot.
