Crazy comeback like no other?

Just ask Kentwood volleyball coach Bil Caillier, whose girls stunned top-ranked Auburn Riverside last Thursday night in Covington.

Down two sets, the Conquerors climbed back into the match and pulled it out in dramatic fashion, taking the fifth set, 17-15.

“It was awesome,” Caillier said. “It was a great win for our team although it started out less than favorable, losing 8-25 and 13-25 (the first two sets). … Our outside hitters played aggressive, and you could tell how much they and their teammates were enjoying the match.”

For the record, the final three game scores were 25-22, 26-24, 17-15.

Haylee Kent and Chalyse Fuimaono led the Kentwood comeback in the North Puget Sound League cross divisional match.

Kentwood improved to 5-2 on the season. The Ravens are 6-1.

The Conquerors trailed 15-14 in the deciding fifth set when they caught a break.

“Our freshman middle hitter Jessi Gaul took a good swing but just missed,” Caillier said. “Riverside players and fans stormed the court, but the referee had called a net violation against Riverside. Instead of losing, we found ourselves tied at 15-15.”

Chelsea Hasting came off the bench and served two aces to win the match.

Calley Heilborn led the Ravens with 21 kills, 16 digs and four aces. Kate Petsova had nine kills, 12 digs, and Ciera Zimmerman distributed 33 assists and seven aces.

Kentwood visits Kennedy Catholic on Tuesday and hosts Kentridge on Thursday.
