The Kent School District is seeking additional candidates to fill a vacancy on its school board.

In the interest of obtaining a larger applicant pool to replaced Russ Hanscom, who resigned from the District No. 1 position in late July for personal reasons, the opportunity to submit an application has been extended to Monday, Oct. 9.

The previous deadline was Sept. 21.

In order to maintain the integrity of the process, applications previously submitted have not been reviewed by the board, according to a district media release.

To be eligible to serve on the school board, candidates must be U.S. citizens, qualified voters and have permanent residence in the boundaries of District No. 1, which includes the portion of the school district south of 192nd Street, east of Military Road, north of James and West Meeker streets and west of 104th Avenue Southeast and 116th Avenue Southeast.

Interested candidates should contact the superintendent’s office at 253-373-7701 to request an application packet. Completed applications can be mailed or dropped off at the district’s administration center, 12033 SE 256th Street, Kent, 98030, or emailed to ksdboardvacancy@kent.k12.wa.us.

Applications will be reviewed on Tuesday, Oct. 10, and successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday, Oct. 11. The board will interview and select a candidate on Wednesday, Oct. 18, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom of the administration center. The new board member will be sworn in Wednesday, Oct. 25.
