Kent elected officials gearing up for elections

Kent City Councilwoman Jamie Danielson has announced her intent for election to the Council.

Danielson, 28, a Kent attorney, was appointed by the Council last July to fill out the remaining time on Position No. 2. The seat became vacant earlier this year with the death of Councilman Bob O’Brien, 76.

“I’m really excited about the progress we’ve made,” Danielson said in a phone interview. “Some things we’ve done right and other things we need to work on. But I’m excited about the progress to make our city better. I’ve really enjoyed my time on Council and I would like to continue to do that for the next four years.”

Danielson, the youngest member of the Council, is an attorney with Hanis Irvine Prothero of Kent. She practices family law, trusts and estates, and land use.

Danielson hosted a campaign kick-off party May 9 at the Hanis Irvine Prothero office.

No other candidates have announced to challenge Danielson, although the official filing period has yet to start. It begins May 15 and runs through June 5. (Stay tuned to the Kent Reporter for regular updates on candidate filings.)

Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke also is planning to run for re-election, although she wasn’t available for comment by press time. There will be a campaign-kickoff party for her from 2-5 p.m. May 17 at Mexico Lindo Restaurant, 203 S. Fourth Ave., Kent. Call Roberto Gonzales at 253-854-5320 to RSVP for the party.

Candidates must file for office June 1-5 with the King County Elections division. The primary is Aug. 3. It takes at least three candidates for a position to require a primary race. The general election is Nov. 3.
