Kent School Board member Russ Hanscom resigned from his Position No. 1 seat.

Hanscom, who was elected to his second four-year term on the board in 2015, said in an email he resigned on July 25 for personal reasons.

“I’ve got a lot going on right now,” he said.

Hanscom is running for the Kent City Council against incumbent Brenda Fincher in the November general election.

Hanscom’s experience in the health care industry and his commitment to his own family, including children enrolled in Kent schools, provided him with a unique perspective from which to lead, govern and create policy, according to a media release from the Kent School District.

“We appreciate Russ’s service on the school board,” Superintendent Calvin J. Watts said in the release. “One of his strengths rested in his desire to face complex issues directly, particularly when students and families were impacted.”

Per state law, the district has 90 days to fill the vacancy.

“The district will be following the state prescribed process to identify interested parties and candidates for a thoughtful, thorough and fair appointment process,” district spokesman Chris Loftis said in an email.
