The Puget Sound region is expected to experience the hottest temperatures of the year this week when highs reach into the mid-90s.

While hot weather means outdoor fun, Puget Sound Fire reminds residents about the potential dangers it also brings.

Health safety:

• Stay hydrated with non-caffeinated liquids

• Wear sunscreen – especially children

• Check on the elderly and those house-bound regularly

• Close drapes and windows during the day to keep homes cooler

• Consider waiting until the evenings before going out

Water safety:

• Wear a Coast Guard approved and well-fitting life jacket

• Swim at locations that have lifeguards

• Supervise children at all times

• Know that lake and river temperatures can be as low as 50 degrees

• Remember that water activities and alcohol do not mix well

Fire safety:

• Know that there is a Phase 1 burn ban in this area

• Check with your local fire department before starting any outdoor fires

• Never discard cigarettes or other burning materials on the ground

• Keep landscaping near your home well-watered and away from the building

• Dispose of BBQ ashes in a tightly sealed metal container – not a paper sack
