A Kent fire investigator as of Sunday afternoon was looking into the cause of a house fire that took place this morning, July 4, in the 13500 block of S.E. 233 Street. The fire, which was first reported at 11:20 a.m., has displaced three people.

The first Kent firefighters on scene reported heavy black smoke coming from the back of house and quickly confirmed that no one was still in the single-story home. In addition to attacking the fire through the front door, firefighters cut a hole in the roof to remove much of the smoke and heat, helping to improve the visibility in the house and aiding the firefighting effort. The fire was controlled in less than 10 minutes. Smoke damage was extensive through the structure.

An adult woman who was home at the time of the fire, fled after discovering she could not extinguish the fire herself. A passerby assisted her in calling 9-1-1. Firefighters confirmed the woman was not injured in the fire, though she was shaken up by the experience. A total of two adults and one child have been displaced, but are being cared for by friends and relatives.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it does not appear to be fireworks-related.
