Defenseman Jared Hauf of the Seattle Thunderbirds made a top-10 list of new faces to watch this season in the Western Hockey League.

The T-Birds open the 2011-12 regular season Sept. 24 against the Portland Winterhawks at the ShoWare Center in Kent.

Kelly Friesen, who covers the WHL for Yahoo! Sports, named Hauf as a player to watch with the following description:

“With his 6-foot-5, 198-pound frame, it’s hard to overlook Jared Hauf,” Friesen wrote. “The big defenseman will add some much needed size and grit to the Seattle Thunderbirds blueline. Despite initially appearing as merely a shut-down defenseman, Hauf can also move the puck. The combination of his size, strong defensive play and offensive instincts has sparked comparisons to Jared Cowen.”

Cowen was a 2009 first-round draft pick, ninth overall, by the Ottawa Senators. He will play this season for the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League. Cowen played from 2006-11 with the Spokane Chiefs.

The T-Birds selected Hauf, of Calgary, Alberta, with their first selection in the 2010 Bantam Draft.
